#70 - Flies on Umbrella Hooks
|
| Date/Time: |
Friday: 8 a.m. to noon |
| Instructor: |
Bob Bates |
| Description: |
The umbrella hook is a strange-looking thing; however, patterns tied on it always land properly. No more landing on the side, nose or top. Since the horizontal portion of the hook is short, an extended body is needed to properly balance the fly. Any of the usual patterns can be tied on this hook; hence, the class is organized around standard patterns. The Umbrella Adams will be tied using a duck flank feather to form the tail and body. Standard grizzly hackle tip wings will be easily set with few thread winds (only four after a bit of practice). Brown and grizzly hackles will be wound on the vertical part of the hook. The technique used by the Japanese tiers will be taught to tie off the parachute hackle. An Umbrella March Brown will be tied using a brown-dyed duck flank feather for the tail and body with a duck breast feather or poly wing. A brown hackle will be wrapped on the vertical part of the hook and secured using a Matarelli whip finish tool. A commercial extended body will be used on some patterns, and if time permits students will be taught how to make their own extended bodies. |
| Equipment: |
Vise, bobbins, brown and gray thread (14/0 preferred), scissors, bodkin, head cement and Matarelli whip finish tool (suggested). |

|
| Date/Time: |
Friday: 8 a.m. to noon |
| Instructor: |
Sodie Sodamann and Craig Phillips |
| Description: |
Furled leaders are becoming more popular all the time, but they can be costly if you buy them. Most require jigs or other tools if you want to build them yourself. We will demonstrate a method of constructing your own twisted (furled) leaders from ordinary monofilament fishing line and the only tools needed are your two bare hands (no cumbersome jigs to set up or drills to use). It only takes a couple of minutes to build one and you can make hundreds of leaders from a single spool of mono for just pennies each. |
