#31 - Teaching Beginners to Cast Perfect Loops Within One Hour

Description: In the first half of the workshop attendees learn the methodology of casting. In the second half the attendee teaches a student with supervision by the instructor. Attendee may bring along his/her own beginner student (spouse or child).
Equipment: 5-weight rod/line, 7.5- to 9-foot leader and no yarn.

#32 - Intermediate Two-Handed Casting

#33 - Casting Rendezvous

Description: Have a specific casting problem? Want to learn something new? Just want to cast with the experts? This is the place to go and play! Jim Valle and other FFF casting instructors will be casting throughout the day, having some fun and challenging each other, and are eager to meet and cast with you. Bring your rod, line, leader and yarn fly. Stop in – you just never know who might be throwing a line! New casters, want to give it a try? Come on, we’ll find a rod for you! Fill in your free time between workshops. Big problems, little problems – bring ’em on! Open to all casters of all ages and levels, in the true spirit of the FFF Conclave.

#34 - Certified Casting Instructor – Performance

Description: This is the performance test portion of the FFF Certified Casting Instructor program. Candidates must complete the Casting Instructor Certification workshop and pass the written exam to become certified.
Equipment: Included with prerequisite of workshop for written exam. Must have rod, maximum 9 feet, 7 weight; line, maximum 7-weight floating; leader, minimum 7.5 feet; yarn fly.
Skill Level: Intermediate

#35 - Introduction to Fly Casting

Date/Time: Thursday: 9 a.m. to noon
Instructor: Bob Jacklin
Description: This basic workshop in fly casting is geared for the beginner as well as the intermediate angler. Jacklin believes that the rudiments and principles of all good fly casting are found in three basic fly casts: the roll cast, the pickup/laydown and the false cast. He will cover these three basic fly casts to teach the student line control and accuracy and will also explain theory and the principles of the casts used everyday in our fishing. This workshop will be a hands-on instructional session for learning and improving your fly casting skills. The advanced casts such as the double-haul and shooting line will also be covered. The emphasis on this class will be to improve everyone’s fly casting ability, thus building your fly casting confidence on stream.
Equipment: Rod, reel with line and leader. Bob will furnish the fly!

#36 - Advanced Fly Casting

Description: Advanced casting techniques for distance, accuracy, control casts, etc. Students’ needs largely determine class content. Students MUST be able to double haul.

#37 - Intermediate Casting

#38 - Two-Handed Techniques for Single-Hand Casters

#39 - Practicing with a Purpose

Date/Time: Thursday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Description: This workshop is designed to help you discover your point of failure and then develop effective casting routines and practice drills. This workshop will help you learn what to do when you “hit the wall” and how to get past those inevitable casting plateaus. Specific drills will be presented to help improve distance, accuracy and presentation casting.

#41 - Intro to Spey Casting

Date/Time: Thursday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Instructor: Rick Williams
Description: A half day on the water workshop that introduces the caster to the Spey rod. Class will cover the basics of Spey and two-handed casting including switch cast, single Spey, double Spey and snap-T.
Equipment: Spey rods, reels and lines. Traditional lines (50- to 65-foot heads) will work better than Skagit lines. Some extra rods/reels will be available as needed.

#42 - Demonstration Tier’s Workshop

Description: The workshop is designed to help experienced demonstration tiers be better teachers of the art of fly tying. The format will be an open discussion featuring a panel of well-known demonstration tiers. All tiers who are demonstration tiers at conclave should attend, but the workshop is open to all tiers who want to learn how to communicate better with their audience. #43 - Tying George Grant Flies with Todd Collins

Date/Time: Thursday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Description: This workshop’s objective is to explore and unlock the mystery of George Grant’s fly tying methods. The morning session will consist of a brief history of the woven hair hackle, selection and preparation of hair to be used. After a discussion of special tools and weaving setup, then students will weave their own hackles. After the lunch break we will discuss the methods and materials used to construct the hard-bodied nymph including brass pins and monofilament as fly tying materials. The remainder of the afternoon session will be spent making nymph bodies and attaching the hackles to complete the fly.
Equipment: Smooth jaw pliers, two-thread bobbins, two or more matching color spools of Danville 210 and 6/0 thread in orange, yellow, tan or light green, along with other basic tying tools. No pedestal vises, please. An extensive kit of tools and materials is provided for students to use and keep. Questions? Call 406-491-2464.

#44 - Tying and Fishing Soft Hackles

Description: We will be tying all soft hackles and learning about the history of the soft hackle. Students will learn how to fish the soft hackle while learning about the waters, with time for questions and answers.

#45 - Life Cycle of the Caddis

Description: Students will learn to tie each step of the metamorphosis of the caddisfly – four patterns – and will fish those flies in the afternoon session after a brief entomology session.
Equipment: Morning session; vise, scissors, bobbin, hackle pliers, whip finisher and bodkin. Afternoon session; rod and reel, waders, polarized sunglasses, water, hat, vest, etc., and Montana fishing license.

#46 - Czech Nymphing: Tying The Flies And Catching The Fish

#47 - How to Read and Fish a River

Description: We will start with two basics by screening the river for insects. Emphasis will be placed on paying attention to the environment and river as to fishing methods. Then we will pick the right flies and fishing techniques.

#48 - Dry Fly Frame of Mind

#52 - The Antique Angler

Date/Time: Thursday: 8 a.m. to Noon.

Description: This hands-on workshop returns us to our angling past. Students will make a furled leader, a functional blind-eye hook and an early fly pattern based on the antique text. It offers information on early fly fishing: gut and horsehair lines, the loop rod, explicating the antique text, the history of fly fishing and other historic topics. Students exit with fishable, “antique” terminal tackle. Here is a workshop for the curious and the creative.
